Gabrielle Thompson

Gabrielle is a relationship property lawyer based in Auckland, practising as a Senior Associate within Lane Neave’s litigation and asset management teams. She specialises in all aspects of relationship property law in New Zealand – from negotiated settlements and contracting out agreements (commonly known as pre-nups), through to contested separations and complex property disputes litigated in the Family Court and High Court.

Gabrielle works with individuals across Auckland and throughout New Zealand who are navigating separation, planning ahead with a relationship property agreement, or dealing with trust and estate disputes tied to a relationship breakdown.

Gabrielle’s relationship property practice covers:

  • Separation and division of relationship property in New Zealand – including the family home, KiwiSaver, business interests, and other assets, whether agreed or contested.
  • Contracting out agreements (pre-nuptial agreements) for couples entering marriage, civil union, or de facto relationships who want to agree on how property will be treated.
  • Relationship property disputes involving trusts – where assets have been structured in trusts and questions arise about whether those assets form part of the relationship property pool.
  • Complex and high-value matters involving multiple properties, offshore assets, or business interests.
  • Trust and estate disputes, including contesting a will, Family Protection Act claims, and Testamentary Promise claims.
  • Independent legal advice on relationship property agreements drafted by another party’s lawyer.

Gabrielle began her legal career at a leading provincial firm, where she developed strong courtroom advocacy experience by appearing regularly in the District Court, Family Court, High Court, and in alternative dispute resolution.

She subsequently worked at a specialist litigation firm, advising national and multinational clients on civil, insurance, and disciplinary matters. She holds an LLM (Masters of Law), LLB, and BSocSc, is a member of the NZLS Family Law Section (FLS), FLS Regional Representative for Auckland, serves on the FLS Education Advisory Panel, and is an affiliate of ADSI.
