It’s been a big year for employment law, and the coming months will bring more change for employers. A new Government will soon be setting its priorities, and the Employment Leave Act 2026 will replace the Holidays Act 2003 on 6 August 2028.
We’re teaming up with Human Resources New Zealand (HRNZ) for two events to help HR professionals, people leaders and employers make sense of what’s ahead and start planning early. We’d love for you to join us.
Wednesday 18 November – After the Election: Navigating What Comes Next for HR
In partnership with HRNZ’s Canterbury network, Partner Nicola Cuervo and our Employment Law team will host a timely post-election panel exploring what the new political landscape could mean for people and workplace practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The panel will look at the potential implications for:
- employment relations and workplace policy
- immigration and skills
- the wider labour market.
You’ll come away with informed perspectives on what HR professionals and business leaders should be watching as the new Government’s priorities take shape – and a chance to connect with your local HR community over drinks and nibbles.

Thursday 19 November – webinar: Farewell Holidays Act 2003, Hello Employment Leave Act 2026
The Employment Leave Act 2026 is one of the most anticipated employment law changes of recent years, and it will fundamentally change how leave is earned, taken and paid. The new rules start on 6 August 2028, but employers have plenty to do before then.
Employment Law Partners Fiona McMillan, Andy Bell and Nicola Cuervo will bring you up to speed on the main changes, including:
- leave accrual in hours from day one of employment
- sick leave becoming pro-rated
- public holidays and the ‘otherwise working day’ test
- casual employees and additional hours: the Leave Compensation Payment (LCP)
- cashing up annual leave
- leave payments under one consistent method.
They’ll also share the practical steps businesses should take over the next 18 months to be ready.
