Rising through the IFLR1000 directory rankings

Our practices continue to rise through the IFLR1000 ranks, with Banking and Financial Services up one tier and newcomer Restructuring and Insolvency ranked as notable.

Our Banking and Financial Services practice now has a Tier 3 ranking – up from being notable in 2024. In addition, our Capital Markets expertise has been recognised as notable for the second year in a row.

On the individual lawyer front, Partner Evelyn Jones has been recognised as a highly regarded woman leader – one of 15 in New Zealand. Meanwhile, James Cochrane has been named as a rising star Partner.

IFLR 1000 states that these personal achievements highlight the significant impact Evelyn and James have made on the legal landscape, showcasing dedication, expertise, and outstanding contributions.

Evelyn, who heads our Banking and Financial Services practice, is delighted with the team’s jump in rankings, saying that it’s a reflection of their strong capabilities in complex fields.

“We are known for our client service delivery – often praised for our hands-on and personal approach.

“Our expertise and reputation have led to frequent instructions on complex transactions such as off-balance sheet and securitisation transactions, and aircraft leasing and financing transactions.”

Being ranked as notable for the first time is a strong signal of our Restructuring and Insolvency practice’s expansion and growth, says James.

“We’re now one of the largest Restructuring and Insolvency teams in New Zealand, with capability across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown.

“The team has a broad range of experience advising clients on complex restructuring, workout and insolvency matters.”

IFLR1000 is part of the London-based Legal Benchmarking Group, with research solely on business law.

To determine its rankings, IFLR1000 analyses thousands of submissions, conducts thousands of interviews with law firm partners, and surveys tens of thousands of clients.

They evaluate law firms and lawyers by practice area within a jurisdiction based on transactional deal evidence, with ratings based on three key criteria: complexity, innovation and market impact.
