24 July 2021 – Save the Date

Employers and employees finally have a concrete date to work with. The Holidays (Increasing Sick Leave) Amendment Bill received royal assent on 24 May 2021, a mere few days after passing its third reading.

This means 24 July 2021 will be the date sick leave entitlement increases from 5 to 10 days.

A reminder of what the change entails:

  • Unused sick leave remains the same: it can be carried over up to a maximum entitlement of 20 days per annum.
  • New employees employed on or after 24 July 2021 will receive 10 days of sick leave after 6 months of continuous employment.
  • Current employees will receive 10 days of sick leave upon reaching their next sick leave entitlement anniversary after 24 July 2021.

Now that we have a date, this is the time to ensure your Employment Agreements will be compliant and your payroll systems are ready for the change.
