Employment

Our employment law team is experienced and understand the complexities that come with human resource management and employment law. That means we will give you practical, robust and innovative legal advice enabling you to make sound employment-related decisions for your business and staff.

We can help to improve the productivity of your workforce by providing you with top quality external legal advice and confidence in your decisions.

When working with clients we:

  • Listen and take the time to understand your needs
  • Agree on a fee solution for each instruction that works for both parties
  • Ensure our advice is clear and unequivocal
  • Give relevant, reliable advice and advocacy at a standard that will meet and exceed your expectations
  • Think laterally to find solutions to challenges
  • Be easily contactable and happy to meet and chat on a regular basis

Our team is recognised as a leading employment practice by Chambers and Partners, Legal 500 and Doyles Guide. We are also one of a limited number of law firms providing external legal services to New Zealand Government agencies through the All of Government legal panel.

We advise and represent on all aspects of employment law, including health & safety, ACC, privacy and HR strategy.

Our health and safety expertise is in high demand, following the overhaul of New Zealand’s health and safety legislation in the form of the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015, and the subsequent Regulations. We acted on the first defended hearing in New Zealand under the previous legislation in 1994 (Department of Labour v de Spa). We provide health and safety workshops for numerous entities, including WorkSafe (New Zealand’s health and safety Regulator), ACC (New Zealand’s accident compensation Regulator) and the New Zealand Law Society.

Our team is one of the largest and most experienced employment law teams in New Zealand with offices in Christchurch, Queenstown, Auckland and Wellington. This geographical coverage is not matched by any other major law firm in New Zealand and it enables us to provide more immediate and intimate employment legal services and representation to clients through the country.

We are known for having a long established relationship with our clients and to be fully engaged and involved with our clients’ business to understand their unique and respective industries. This ensures that we can offer apragmatic and bespoke service, in which we don’t just provide legal advice, we partner with clients.

We provide a full legal service; regularly appearing at Mediations and hearings in the Employment Relations Authority, Employment Court and ordinary Courts, including providing advice in relation to a Supreme Court matter. We undertake all our own litigation, which ensures that our clients always stay in control of a matter.

We are genuinely passionate about what we do; we enjoy our work and our clients’ company, which we believe translates into the provision of excellent legal services. We are at the forefront of employment law in New Zealand, which is demonstrated by the attendance at our workshops around the country.

Most recently, the Employment Law team has been busy, working under incredible pressure, to assist our clients in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the New Zealand Government’s response, which resulted in a nationwide lockdown taking effect from 25 March 2020. The lockdown, and subsequent restrictions imposed by the New Zealand Government, has raised some unique and unprecedented employment, health and safety, immigration and ACC issues. The entire team worked remotely, continuing to service and support clients through these challenging times.

Our clients can feel confident at all times that we will handle all matters with professionalism and efficiency. Our focus is on delivery practical advice and support. One key difference between us and our competitors is that we understand that being able to pick up the phone and receive prompt advice is important to clients. We are not the type of firm that will produce a lengthy written opinion when a snappy phone conversation or short email will provide the support required.
